This webinar will present a community-engaged program of research focused on preventing sexual and intimate partner violence and promoting flourishing among Indigenous and LGBTQ2S+ youth. Drawing on years of partnerships with Tribal Nations, LGBTQ2S+ communities, and youth-serving organizations, Dr. Edwards will discuss the development/adaptation, implementation, and evaluation of culturally grounded prevention and intervention programs for structurally minoritized youth. The webinar will highlight lessons learned from community-based participatory research, implementation science, and strengths-based approaches to promoting safety, resilience, and flourishing, while discussing implications for research, practice, and policy.
Bio
Katie M. Edwards, Ph.D. is Professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work and Director of the Interpersonal Violence Research Laboratory. Her research focuses on preventing and responding to sexual and intimate partner violence, child maltreatment, and related health disparities through community-engaged and culturally responsive approaches. She has authored more than 230 peer-reviewed publications and has served as Principal Investigator on more than $25 million in externally funded research. Dr. Edwards partners closely with Tribal Nations, LGBTQ2S+ communities, and youth-serving organizations to develop/adapt, implement, and evaluate interventions that promote safety, healing, and human flourishing. She is recognized among the world's top 2% of scientists based on standardized citation metrics.
Steven Wilson is an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and is the Program Director for Peaceful Means - Sexual Violence Prevention Center located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Steven is also a co-founder & advisor to the Oglala Lakota Nation Youth Council and serves on many Native American serving boards and councils. He is also a student at the Oglala Lakota College where he is studying to obtain his Bachelor of Social Work. Steven believes the future of his nation is bright when the children are safe and protected.
